Gruen

Excellent food, trendy crowds: the perennially “in” place at Gefinor, Clemenceau

Named after Victor Gruen, the architect who designed the Gefinor complex, Gruen eatery first opened its doors in 2005. A truly unique place characterized by ultra-modern design, an ever-changing but always hip crowd and what is unquestionably some of the best food in town. Gruen is also one of those restaurants that drastically changes character with the time of day. Strategically located at the center of a business hub in Clemenceau and two steps from the American University of Beirut Medical Center, lunch hour at Gruen is a parade of doctors, bankers, CEOs and other professionals. Fast forward a few hours and the cantina-like loud space is suddenly transformed into an intimate candle-lit nest suitable for a romantic date in a drastic ambiance change. Breakfast at Gruen tells yet another tale of mostly older regulars lingering on their coffee over the latest newspaper political debates. These metamorphoses are a tour de force that could be credited to the ever-attentive owner who is usually on site. An older lady with impeccable taste, you are likely to encounter her strolling between the tables, shelling out hellos here and there if not arranging the latest fresh flower bouquet on display. The design of the restaurant also deserves a few words. Imagine a spacious hall-like eatery with Tom Dixon-like globe lamps hanging from the ceiling over three rows of sleek tables and chairs and a sober black and white color scheme and you’ll get the feel of Gruen. Passed the outdoor seating area at the entrance, a marble counter displays yummy treats in funky bags that can be purchased on sight. If you’re in the mood for scrumptious food in a trendy setting, head no further than Gruen. Be warned, the prices can be steep but the taste may just overcome the hole in your pocket.
