In 2013 a pastry chef by the name of Dominique Ansel had the bright idea of merging a donut and a croissant. He trademarked it and built a quasi empire around it as the frenzy exploded from New York. Today Cronuts are sold all around the world with people lining up in bad weather to get their fix.
