Think of Papercup as coffee-infused book therapy!
Inspired by the owner’s passion for books and personal frustration with the lack of a cozy, neighborhood spot, Papercup opened its doors in June 2009 as a dedicated specialized bookshop. Located on a charming street in the eclectic Mar Mikhael neighborhood of Beirut, you will find their shelves filled with beautiful books on art, architecture, design, photography, and fashion. Those are complemented by a curated selection of magazines, children reads, graphic novels and stationery finds, as well as their bespoke ordering service – if you can’t find it on their shelves, they will order it with complimentary shipping.
The place is unique in its beautiful design complete with a sliding wooden ladder to reach that must-have novel on the top shelf. You may want to consider requesting the latter simply for the pleasure of watching the staff glide through the selection. A distinctive characteristic of Papercup is its quiet atmosphere. This is the avid reader's haven; don’t expect loud chatter over Vogue debates or heated political arguments over coffee. There seems to be an unwritten rule for silence where customers and staff alike instinctively feel they have to speak in hushed tones almost out of respect for the great literature around. It is also the only place we know of where you are free to browse a rich selection of books and magazines at your leisure without salespeople hovering over your shoulders. To sweeten the deal, should you not be convinced yet, they serve a delicious array of coffees, teas and a daily cake for those who would like to enjoy a read in-house.
